The
Angola Educational Assistance Fund
Michael
LeM. Kennedy, late chairman of Citizens Energy Corporation and the
son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, announced the establishment
of the Angola Educational Assistance Fund (AEAF) in June, 1996.
The AEAF was created to operate as a not-for-profit organization
to facilitate the establishment of the Catholic University of Angola,
to promote the collaboration between higher education institutions
in Angola and abroad, and to encourage the involvement of the private
sector in the reconstruction of Angolan society.
The
Angola Educational Assistance Fund operates as a charitable and
tax-exempt foundation and qualifies for tax-exempt status under
Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. The
Angola Educational Assistance Fund's mission includes carrying out
fund-raising and representing the interests of the Catholic University
within the international business community active in Angola. In
addition, the Fund will help to coordinate visiting fellowships
from universities and colleges in the U.S. and other countries,
and will offer professional and educational training in Angola.
The
corporations MOBIL (USA), Energy Africa (South Africa), SAGA (Norway),
and Citizens Energy Corporation (USA), are the original contributors
to the Angola Educational Assistance Fund, with initial donations
totaling more than 1.6 million US dollars in June 1996.
